With his human rights organization TARGET e. V., Rüdiger Nehberg is launching another campaign for an end to the genital mutilation of girls and women in Guinea-Bissau.
"The millennia-old custom of genital mutilation of girls is always and falsely justified by religion. That's why we work with imam teams to combat the crime, because most of those affected are Muslim," says Nehberg, explaining his strategy. In Guinea-Bissau in West Africa, two teams trained by TARGET e. V. will be traveling to the cities and sometimes hard-to-reach villages in the coming months to educate the people.
In Guinea-Bissau, almost every second girl is genitally mutilated. The genital mutilation is followed by lifelong, often massive physical and psychological damage.
TARGET e. V., in cooperation with top Islamic scholars, is successfully campaigning for an end to FGM on the ground in various African countries. "If the mutilation of girls and women stops in the countries of origin, the daughters of migrants and refugees living here in Germany will also be protected, because this inconceivable tradition is largely perpetuated by ignorance and pressure from families," says Annette Nehberg-Weber from TARGET e. V.
