TARGET is on the road with imam teams in awareness campaigns in Guinea-Bissau, from village to village, from mosque to mosque
Access to knowledge is the basis for an intact future for girls and women in Guinea-Bissau, knowledge that prevents female genital mutilation. The practice of genital mutilation on girls and women is still wrongly justified by religion. TARGET e. V., in partnership with Islam, has succeeded in countering the idea that female genital mutilation is required by the Koran. We succeeded in bringing together the highest clerics of Islam in Al Azhar in Cairo. They researched the holy scriptures and, with the advice of medical scientists, came to the sensational conclusion:
"Female circumcision is an inherited bad habit (...) with no basis in the Koran or an authentic tradition of the Prophet. (...) Therefore, the practice must be stopped in accordance with one of the highest values of Islam, namely not to harm people without reason" (Excerpts from the Azhar Fatwa of 23.11.2006).

With this message, TARGET is on the road with imam teams in awareness campaigns in Guinea-Bissau, from village to village, from mosque to mosque. They personally campaign in the communities for an end to the custom. Educating one person on the topic of female genital mutilation, both religiously and medically, costs an average of EUR 10.
