In Guinea-Bissau, the network of multipliers trained by TARGET is constantly expanding. They are a central component of our educational work against female genital mutilation (FGM) on the ground.
The women and men live in the affected communities, speak the local language and enjoy the trust of their fellow human beings. This is precisely what is crucial: because with a deeply rooted and sensitive issue such as female genital mutilation, it is not just knowledge that is needed. Personal proximity is an important tool for bringing about real change.
Some of the multipliers work as health officers - some are also involved on a voluntary basis alongside their main job. Thanks to their proximity to the population and their social standing, they can provide targeted information, dispel misunderstandings and initiate sustainable thought processes.
In our training courses, they receive in-depth knowledge about the religious aspects, the health and social consequences of female genital mutilation as well as the legal background. On this basis, they develop their own campaigns and conduct educational talks directly in their communities - culturally sensitive, fact-based and with personal conviction.
The aim is to bring about a change in attitudes towards the millennia-old tradition by educating people from within. With every multiplier who joins us, not only does our network grow, but so does the chance to protect girls and women from FGM in the long term.
