A clinic for the victims of female genital mutilation in the Ethiopian desert
Oasis of hope
Bringing their child into the world safely and securely - long an unfulfillable wish for the women of the Afar, almost all of whom are genitally mutilated. In such cases, a natural birth is life-threatening for mother and child. But medical help was nowhere in sight for a long time for the semi-nomadic people in the Ethiopian desert. Annette and Rüdiger Nehberg and their human rights organization TARGET e.V. have been fighting tirelessly for many years to end female genital mutilation and opened a clinic for gynaecology and obstetrics on the edge of the Danakil Desert in 2015. Since then, more than 1,000 babies have been born here - also with the support of doctors from Switzerland.
