On September 15, 2025 at 7:15 am, Nilo Yanomami was born - the first child to be born in TARGET's new hospital. Just nine days after the opening of the Yanomami clinic, his mother, Milena Yanomami, was allowed to use the new birthing room. This was designed with wide windows for fresh air and offers a special view: of the Yanomami village and the surrounding jungle - her home.
The birth of Nilo has a special symbolic power. This is because the Yanomami have been affected by dramatically high infant mortality rates in recent years: In 2023 alone, around 800 children under the age of five died from a lack of healthcare, malnutrition and malaria. The situation has been exacerbated by illegal gold mining, which contaminates rivers, drives away hunting game and introduces diseases.
The first birth in the new clinic brings hope: for healthier beginnings and a new chapter for the Yanomami. More on the topic: Opening of TARGET's Yanomami clinic About the Yanomami.
